Today, Royal Caribbean International announced the departure of Empress and Majesty of the Seas. The oldest ships in the Royal Caribbean Fleet, Empress of the Seas debuted in 1990 and Majesty of the Seas in 1992. Both vessels have generated decades of memories for millions of cruisers.
“Saying goodbye to these two beloved ships is a major moment in Royal Caribbean’s history – one that is difficult but necessary. With plans for new, innovative ships to join our fleet in the upcoming years, we look forward to our guests and crew continuing to make new memories with us,” said Micheal Baylay, CEO of Royal Caribbean International.
Empress of the Seas began sailing in 1990 with three and four-night itineraries to the Bahamas from Miami, and she was the first ship designed specifically for short itineraries. Empress made waves by being the first Royal Caribbean ship to sail out of Bayonne, New Jersey, in 2004 when the Terminal opened and was the first Royal Caribbean ship to sail to Cuba.
Majesty of the Seas began sailing seven-night Caribbean itineraries out of Miami, Florida, in 1992 and was the last of the Sovereign-class ships that completely redefined the cruise industry.
Both Majesty and Empress of the Seas were incredible innovations that propelled the cruise industry into what it is today, and they will be sorely missed by cruisers worldwide.
The buyers of these ships have not been disclosed but are based in the Asia-pacific region. Further sailing information will come at a later time from the buyers.
All Royal Caribbean International sailings on both Majesty and empress have been cancelled.
