CLIA CEO Announces Departure

Kelly Craighead CLIA Departure

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the largest trade association representing the global cruise industry, announced today that its CEO, Kelly Craighead, will step down from her role. The announcement marks the end of a significant chapter for both Craighead and the organization as the cruise industry continues to navigate a rapidly changing landscape.

Craighead, who took the helm in 2019, played a pivotal role in guiding the industry through the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her leadership was critical in the establishment of health and safety protocols that allowed the cruise industry to resume operations, earning praise from key industry stakeholders and government agencies alike.

During her tenure, Craighead also championed sustainable cruising practices, aligning CLIA’s initiatives with global environmental goals. Under her guidance, CLIA members committed to reducing carbon emissions and embraced technological innovations aimed at creating a greener future for cruising. This included bolstering the adoption of cleaner fuel alternatives and advocating for port electrification.

In her departure statement, Craighead expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead CLIA during such a transformative period. "It has been an honor to work alongside such a dedicated and resilient community. The cruise industry’s journey over the past few years is a testament to our collective strength, and I am confident that CLIA will continue to thrive in the years to come," she said.

Craighead’s departure comes as the cruise industry faces both renewed growth and evolving challenges. Passenger numbers have rebounded strongly, but there is increasing pressure to meet sustainability demands and adapt to shifting consumer expectations. The search for her successor is expected to focus on individuals with a vision for navigating this dual mandate of growth and environmental responsibility.

CLIA has not yet named an interim CEO, but the board of directors has expressed their commitment to ensuring a smooth transition. "Kelly’s impact on the cruise industry cannot be overstated. Her leadership through an exceptionally difficult period has positioned us well for the future, and we wish her nothing but success in her next endeavors," a statement from the board read.

Craighead’s legacy as CEO will be remembered for her crisis management, advocacy for sustainable practices, and efforts to modernize the industry. As the industry looks ahead, her departure marks both the end of an era and the beginning of a new phase of growth and adaptation for CLIA.
